Background: church and castle are the two most important/ powerful figures in the medieval world, church. Integral part of daily lives: monopoly on learning, castle. These reflected the values of a culture and celebrated the exploits of a hero. Ex: beowulf, the song of roland, the ninelugenied: the matter of france = the song of roland, stories of the lives of the saints and miracle plays, romances/ chivalric stories. The matter of britain = anything with arthur and his knights of the round table. Background: historical event happened in 778 a. d during reign of charlemagne but only written down around the year 1100, originally chronicled the battle against the basques when the franks invaded spain. The campaign was not very successful: the work was influenced by the crusades, changed to a fight against the saracens/ pagans, roland, brave in battle. Sacrifices his life by his blood vessels exploding when he blows the horn: one of the 1st christian heroes.
