She really died: magic, woman/ cousin appear out of nowhere at end of story, castle. Everyone is gone in the morning: but someone must have closed the gate on him, trials. Crossing the river: fisher king, tries to cross the river but no bridges are too be found, a fisher tells him he can stay at his house for the night.
