He ran away at the age of 14 to. He did his schooling later, passed the university exam, travelled a great deal and became the most well-known scandinavian writer of fairy tales. He published four collections of fairy tales, drawn from danish folk tales. He is seen as the creator of the modern fairy tale, and of including realism within them.
