This is what he does to henry because he wants to be with catherine (who has a poor dowry) Circumstances of the narrative are gothic, things happening in the moonlight, otherworldly sense, mysterious, hints of ghosts. Often talks about forbidden topics (such as sex) Anne rice- an author similar to anne radcliffe. A woman in charge of her own life. Austen likes to work with irony and ironic contrast. She explains a woman who is not a heroine type but before our eyes she changes to a heroine. She makes fun of gothic novels and people who read gothic- she is in a way using the gothic tradition by making fun of it. Catherine imagines it"s going to look a particular way- and she is disappointed when it doesn"t match up to gothic expectations.
