Create models from scratch, modify or study existing models within a virtual environment. Analyze the physics behind the design; stress analysis. Wireframe: contains only edge and vertex information; example, stl files. Solid modelling: composed of solid features; boxes, cylinders, cones, etc. More easily derive information; surface area, volume, etc. Analyze the object; what material its composed of or will it fail under pressure, etc. The only difference is: solid models have surface information and wireframe doesn"t. Every surface can be described by a mathematical model by using equations. When we analyze the surface, the data obtained is called point cloud data . Usually, an algorithm is developed through a software, embedded on the scanner. The higher the resolution, the denser the point cloud, the more detailed the solid model would be.
