ENVIRSC 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Fluid Parcel, Humidity, Dew Point
Document Summary
It gives us an idea on how much water is going to be turned into clouds and then brought back down; gives us an idea of how much latent heat is being transferred in the atmosphere. What is specific humidity (sh): actual quantity of water vapour in the air, sh = mass of water vapour (g) / mass of total air (kg) What us saturation specific humidity: maximum amount of h20v (sh) that an air parcel can contain at any given time, based on temperature. How is saturation achieved: density can not be increased above a certain level, change of phase once limit is achieved, water vapour has a higher latent heat than air. What is dew point: temperature at which air, when cooled, becomes saturated, always at or below the actual air temperature, condensation takes place when warm air mixes with cool air.
