Env sci 1a03 podcast 4: earth revolves around the sun in an ecliptic plane (the revolution, earth travels closer to the sun in january 4th. This point is called perihelion: earth is furthest from the sun around july 4th. This is called aphelion: radiation intensity varies 7% between the perihelion and the aphelion. Effects of earth"s rotation: the equator and axis are the basis of the geographic grid, rotation, longitude, and latitude lines are used to define locations on earth, earth flattens near the poles and bulges in the middle. The plane of ecliptic: earth"s orbital perpendicular plane. Circles of illumination: separates the portion of the earth that is illuminated from the part that is not illuminated. June solstice: the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere (longest day) and the beginning of winter (shortest day) in the southern hemisphere; june 21st ; 24 hour night in. Antarctic circle, 24 hour day in arctic circle.
