ENVIRSC 1C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: June Solstice, Subsolar Point, Antarctic Circle
Document Summary
Earths movement around the sun: as the earth revolves around the sun, it takes an elliptical path on a flat plane, known as the elliptical plane. Earths rotation and tilt of the earth s axis: earth rotates on its axis completing one spin every 24 hours- defines the length of the day, the earths axis of rotation is nor perpendicular to its elliptical/ orbital plane. It is tilted by 23. 5 degrees from it and the northern axis aligns with the star polaris. Daily energy balance: the daily variation in air temperature is controlled by the net radiation- which is the balance between incoming and outgoing solar and infrared radiation. The air loses heat to the surface and the air temperature falls with temperature coolest just before sunrise. December solstice: this is december 22nd and marks the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere.
