ENVIRSC 1C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Ecological Pyramid, Ecotone, Herbivore
Document Summary
An ecosystem is a community of different species interacting w 1 another & w their environment so as to perpetuate or sustain their grouping. Various microbes colonizing the gut of a termite. An ecotone is a transitional region b/n different ecosystems. It shares many of the species & characteristics of both ecosystems, but it may also include unique conditions that support distinctive plant & animal species. An ecotone is also often characterized by greater biodiversity. There are 2 types of components in a given area or ecosystem. Living organisms & their products are the biotic/organic component. Non-living components such as air, water & rocks are the abiotic/inorganic component. Ecosystems are composed of different types of organisms. Producers convert sunlight to energy via photosynthesis & transform co2 into organic c while releasing o2 as a by-product. They are autotrophs, meaning self-feeding organisms (ie green plants) Energy may also be found in inorganic compounds for example various forms of iron.
