Geography is the study of patterns and processes on the earth"s surface. Derived from greek geo-the earth graphe-to write about. Physical geography: study of patterns and processes of the physical world, physical environment (landforms, climate, hydrology, geology, ecology, etc) Human geography: study of patterns and processes of the human world, social environment (economy, culture, politics behavior, etc) Involves interpretation: description of the spatial organization (patterns) of people, places and human phenomena, explanation of the processes that produce these patterns, interpretation of what these patterns mean. Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things. Key concepts to be able to effectively communicate geographical concepts and ideas. Space: areal extent, spatial extent, amount of earth"s surface that something covers, 2 ways to think about space. Absolute space: objective, measurable extent with definable boundaries physically real with define boundaries, campus is defined in terms of absolute space.
