GEOG 1HA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Philia, Hajj, Topological Map
Document Summary
Space: areal extent, how much area is occupied (sq ft/ volume) A real extent; used in both absolute (objective) and relative (perceptual) forms. 2 types of space: absolute space: objective, physically real, measurable extent and definable boundaries. Key for map making, description and analysis of spatial distribution. Mcmaster university campus (boundaries coyotes paradise, main street west) Relative space: subjective/ perceptual and variable over time it is socially produced and is subject to continuous change. Locations identified by their relative positioning and importance (ex. Topological map where the scale, distance, and positioning are guesstimates) Mcmaster university campus: seems large but when you get to know the shortcuts the location becomes smaller within your perception. Types of location: absolute mathematical location: mathematical projections. Latitude/ longitude co-ordinators using arbitrary mathematical grid (80 deg w, 43 deg n) Identifies position by reference to an arbitrary mathematical grid system (like latitude or longitude) Relative perceived location: more subjective or based off perception.
