Geographies of cities & settlement iv: urban social geography. Recall: social and cultural difference i. e. religion, language, ethnicity, perceived race, etc. Today: localized expressions of difference i. e. ethnic neighbourhoods. Ethnic groups: a group whose members perceive themselves as different from others because of a common ancestry and/or shared culture. Often: a minority within a larger population. Ethnic areas: a region or neighbourhood that is occupied (to varying degrees) by people of common cultural heritage (i. e. ethnicity) Personal or collective identity: tied to language, religion, shared cultural past, ethnicity, race, etc. Inclusionary and exclusionary, bonding is inclusionary (cohesiveness as a member of a larger community), social exclusion (e. g. ethnic or racial minorities may be excluded from housing, employment, etc. ) Different social divisions exist in urban places. E. g. socio-economic class, age, ethnicity, race, etc. (each has its own spatial patterns in cities, this is known as social spatial segregation)
