GEOG 1HA3 Lecture 1: Key concepts
Document Summary
Locations identified by their relative positioning & importance eg. a topological map. In topological maps: scales, distance & positioning are guesstimates. Latitude & longitude co-ordinates using an arbitrary mathematical grid: 80w, 43n: absolute (mathematical) location. A short drive from downtown or adjacent to cootes paradise, etc: nominal (or toponym) location. A place name (a location of significance is given a name) Name of places can provide a degree of locational understanding. Place a location with a particular identity or meaning or significance (individual or collective) location + cultural/human meaning = place. Sense of place: personally, significant place, and can be positive or negative reinforced by uniqueness, eg. tourist attractions, sacred place. Placelessness: places that evoke little or no meaning whatsoever, linked to homogeneity & standardization e. g. chain stores, restaurants. Amount of space between two or more locations: absolute/physical distance. Different from bird"s eye view, time taken: economic/communication distance. Online communication limiting distance b/w people: psychological distance.
