The world is marked by striking spatial variations- haves and have nots. Well-being and levels of development are considered on a continuum between more and less developed. Development: wealth or prosperity i. e. average income. Proxy measures: gdp per capital or gni per capital (gdp/gnp) Gni/population = per capita gni- a measure of income gni or gdp: measures of the total value of all materials, foodstuff, goods services produced by a country for a particular year. World bank- gni per capita country ranked into 5 groups. Gni often understated because not all income is recorded, e. g. tips from a restaurant. Purchasing power parity (ppp): measures how much of a common market basket of goods and services each currency can buy. Measures how much of a common market basket of goods and services each currency can purchase locally. Difference in income: must take in account what you can actually buy, the difference isn"t actually quite as much as you think.
