Greater and greater proporions of the global populaion are living in urban areas each year. Urbanizaion is fundamentally connected to economic and social/cultural change (including industrializaion) Some languages do not difereniate between towns and ciies. Urban area: a community that is deined as being urban", ie. a city, a town, a suburb, etc. Demographic criteria to label what is urban, can be populaion size, and/or density. Economic criteria some sort of measure of the populaion that is employed in certain area"s. A min % of the populaion must be working in industrial, and a max % to be farmers. Japan: populaion >50,000; density >60% of housing in built up" areas; employment >60% in manufacturing, trade, etc. Botswana: populaion >5000; employment >75% in non-agricultural work. Consider: canada is 80% urban; does that mean 80% of us live in ciies. City: a speciic term a place of certain size, funcion and poliical status.
