GEOG 2EI3 Lecture 3: Lecture 3- January 10th.docx
Document Summary
The system is under crisis: a linear system in a finite planet: this system is interacting with the real world: Cannot forget that people live around this system: including: gov"t, corporations which are growing in size and power. Externalizing costs: real costs of making things are not captured in price tag. All along the system, other people pitched in and none of their contributions were recorded. Planned obsolescence: make things useless so that people chuck them out quickly. Perceived obsolescence: convince people to throw away stuff that may be still useful by changing the way things look this will keep us buying! Disposing: either dump it in landfill or burn it in an incinerator and then dumped into landfill, burning the garbage causes the release of toxins and produces dioxin. Stopping burning of trash can stop production of dioxin. Recycling is not enough though because some things are not designed to be recycled or because the toxins it contains.
