GEOG 2OC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Eramosa Karst, Dolostone, Carbonate Rock
Document Summary
Cross section: the region including southern ontario was once the location of an inland sea. This can help geologists to determine the paleoenvironment of the area at the time in order to see how the environment of the region changed over time. Karst landscapes: the carbonate and shale rocks of the niagara escarpment have been eroding for hundreds of thousands of years, creating the beautiful valley landscapes that we have the pleasure of viewing today. Parent material: upper layers of the niagara escarpment are hard sedimentary rocks (limestone, dolostone, Chert) which are highly resistant to erosion and indicative of a reef environment (or epeiric. Sea: lower layers are softer rocks (shale, sandstone) which erode more readilyand are indicative of a shoreline/muddy backwater environment. * this is why the escarpment has its characteristic undercut "sapping" and straight rock face.
