GEOG 2OC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hudson Bay Lowlands, Interior Plains, Canadian Shield
Document Summary
Physiographic regions and geography: physiographic regions: an area with distinct surface landforms (geomorphology) and underlying bedrock structure (geology, geomorphology: the study of landforms and the processes of their genesis. Metamorphic rock altered chemically and physically by great pressures, heat or both formed deep beneath the earth"s surface e. g. gneiss, quartzite, schist. Sedimentary rock: made from sediments (or particles) of other existing rocks carried long distances and are eroded over time to form small sediment particles that then become cemented together once again can also be biogenic (e. g. limestone, chalk) Interior plains: cordillera, canadian shield, hudson bay lowlands, great lakes-st. lawrence lowlands, appalachian uplands, arctic lands. Arctic archipelago: north of arctic circle and boreal treeline, 3 main sub-regions, arctic platform -> located on the western half + made up of sedimentary rock plateaus, arctic coastal plain. Innutian mountain complex -> located on the eastern half containing mountains made from folded and faulted sedimentary strata.
