Three themes in american urbanization: urbanization, urban systems & world cities, metropolitanization & urban regions. Greater proportions of the global population are living in urban areas each year. Over the past two centuries three dominant themes are apparent in the american urban system: urbanization. Increasing proportion of the u. s. population living in cities: 1800: ~5, 1900: 40, 1920: 50, 1950: 64, 2010: 82, 2050: 90% (projected) Few african cities have any global significance at this time. Rising significance of asian cities not yet fully reflected east asia and south asia. Settlement history: gradual westward migration of population. American urbanization: three themes: suburbanization, pursuit of the american dream": homeownership. Including moving to the suburbs i. e. atlanta metropolitan atlanta has a high population not living necessarily in the city of atl: metropolitanization, merging together of formerly independent cities and suburbs. American urban regions (conurbations): megalopolis: richmond, washington d. c. , philadelphia, new york, boston, great lakes/mid-west: chicago, detroit, indianapolis, cleveland, buffalo, cincinnati,
