The australian and antarctic continents, plus about 2000(mostly small) islands in the south. Total area: ~8. 8 m km2 *excluding antarctica (7th largest) No country in excess of 30 million. 1/6 the size of the next biggest region (russia et al. ) 2/3 living in the most populous areas. The rest of the region including papua new guinea is the least urbanized o the planet. Case study: antarctica: geographical extent, territorial claims, human activity, research. Usa has not and russia does not even though they have research bases there. No body can claim the right to antarctica. The red dots are showing research bases. There is mostly environmental research going on. Case study: antarctica - climate: very cold and dry, research: measuring & assessing impacts of climate change. Case study: antarctica - a continent of ice. East antarctic ice sheet (eais): up to 10 000" thick.
