Functions
- Does have a precise mathematical meaning
- Useful to know about it because it has purposes in math but also in labs
- Takes data as an input and then changes it to yield a different result
- Can process numerical and non-numerical data
- A function is like a computer machine that does things you do not want to do
manually over and over again
- Notice the change in the data from blue to orange (this represents the differences
between input and output
- A coffee maker is a kind of mechanical function, it involves taking coffee grounds
and water and it produces liquid coffee
Example of Functions
- On the left is the input on the right is the output, in this case the output is the
largest number
- The = connects the operation of the function to the output
- Data here is an argument that is sent to the function
- In the spreadsheet the output is the number of characters in a name
Uses of functions
- They are common and save time
- In google sheets there are about 350 simple functions you can use
Things and Properties
- So an apple has properties like colour, weight, taste
- We then assign these properties to a thing
Field-Record
- This is flat file it has all the attributes available for the data
- These rows are records, each one represents a thing
- We call the columns fields
