History 1M03 Feb 10 2014 Dr. Sean Corner Lecture ▯ Core 1  • Resources rich but weakly centralized Argead kingdom of Macedonia • 359: Phillip II becomes king [ruthless & smart politician] o Phillip unifies Macedonia under strong royal rule and reorganizes army  [royal/professional/fulltime army] o Phillip had no commitment to traditions of hoplite citizen farmers   Took lead in innovating new way of war. Created new tactics and  exploited them to full advantage o Systematic military reform:  Baggage train [freeing up army and allowing it to be more mobile]  Macedonian phalanx [sarissas▯15’spears, needed training to know  how to wield]  Cavalry [highly trained horsemen]  Light­armed scouts and skirmishers [highly effective siege warfare  based on development of new technology▯catapult]  Torsion catapult & siege warfare  • 357­338: Macedonia expansion ▯ Chalcidice, Thessaly, then all Greece as well as  Illyria and Thrace o Army was devastatingly good • 338: Battle of Chaeronea: o Macedonians vs. Greeks [Theban Sacred Band]  Macedonian military might overtook Greeks & allies • Cut down to last man [came from idea where person would  not give up in front of ‘lover’] • Phillips domination of Greece o League of Corinth o War of Persia  Was about uniting Greeks [appealing for common  peace]▯reinventing himself as their leader  Also about $$, power and expansion/ambition/empire o Panhellism & Macedonia expansionism • 336: Phillip assassinated by an assassins blade • Alexander III the great▯troubled succession
