By the 15th century the new traditions that began in florence were making inroads in other italian states. Nature and impact of this culture varied from region to region significantly. Venice adopted the new learning but adapted it to fit their own societies. The venetian renaissance, and venetian humanism has its own distinct character. Like florence it was a proud republican state - one ruled by families who can from mercantile backgrounds. Venice was much older and governed by a small cadre of elite families. Venice was a great mediterranean power by the 14th c enjoyed ties to byzantine empire and traded with islamic kingdom in the levant. Very devout, strongly believed in its own destiny as a sacred city-state. Patron saint was saint mark, which was important to their identity. These differences in economy, geography and governance as well as a strong religious identity contributed to emergence of venetian culture referred to as patrician humanism.
