Nobility 2% owned 30% of land, exempt from taxation, own private armies (retinue), were in major councils. Goal: unified french kingdom under a strong monarchy. Weakened monarchy was the key to further disorder. Weakened valois monarchy (henri ii 1559; sons fran ois, charles, henri iii) Much larger navy, eventually becomes largest in europe. Edict of nantes (1598): decree of toleration for calvinism. Under richelieu: gradual erosion of huguenot (protestant) privileges eg. reduction in fortified places. Began process of standardizing french legal codes. Versailles is a symbol of louis xiv"s power.
