Establishing a position for mapping & navigation; allowed people to have a broader sense of the world; not achieved easily. Latitude is simple to determine, polaris, the north star a matter of taking a fix of night at taking angel of where you are to polaris; north or south. Southern hemi; cant see polaris or north star; but there are other fixed stars. East to west not as simple, earth is spinning, this becomes the challenge. Latitude is easy, north hem, lat is angel between horizon and polaris. Longitude; not easy problem is rotating earth, no motionless star; all stars appear to be in motion. Measure with clock; a mechanical model of rotating earth; following 24 hr of a day.
