After news of the proclamation of the declaration of the rights of man, civil conflict broke out in the colony between white plantation owners and the free people of colour in the colony (1790) Sent petition to french national assembly, that they should have the same rights. White planters felt it would lead to trouble with the slaves and only by maintaining racial differences and disenfranchising people of color, can they maintain order between their slaves. Despite jacobin opposition, they denied that people of color the same rights as white men. This led to rebellion in saint dominigue first by the free people of color and then by the much larger enslaved population.
