In saint dominigue, france"s largest and most profitable colony in the carribean: 35,000 whites, 500,000 slaves, lived over 28,000 free people of colour some owned slaves but had practical no political or civil rights. The outburst of revolutionary activity in france led to unrest. After proclamation of the declaration of the rights of man and the citizen, conflict broke out between the white plantation owners or planters as they are usually called and the free poc in the colony. In 1790, representations of the free poc petitioned the french national assembly to extend the rights enshrined in the declarations of the rights of man.
