The great war: western front (part 2) (1914 ~ 1918; chronological order whenever possible) Race to the sea (sept ~ nov 1914) French, british, and german forces lock into trench warfare. Whole of the western front from the english channel to switzerland becomes trenches: no man"s land. The land between the two team"s trenches. Trench warfare always favored defense. (dirt, gas masks, barbed wires) Those who attacked never found the glory they were looking for. Trench warfare was a grim reality (wet, cold, waist-deep mud, lice, rats, etc. ) Trench warfare changed the history of quick and victorious wars: christmas truce (dec 25, 1914) A short truce on christmas where the soldiers of opposing sides gathered together in unity for a short time. (only happened in 1914: ypres (april 1915) Region near the atlantic coast of the trench line. Was a salient (a bulge in the line), and therefore britain often attacked here.
