The great war: the war begins (part 1) (aug ~ sept 1914; chronological order whenever possible: week 1: schlieffen plan in action. Review: swinging door plan, strengthen the right, strict timetable: 6 weeks. Germany declares war on russia (aug 1) and france (aug 3) and invades belgium (aug. Belgium (neutral) invasion leads to british entrance of the war. Schlieffen plan is ahead of schedule in the first two weeks: week 2: schlieffen plan slows down. A few mishaps arise between generals and commanders. (attack in the south, juniors make their own decisions, etc) August 17: russia attacks east prussia one month ahead of schedule! (disorganized and not fully ready soldiers attack in order to help struggling france. ) Eastern front (i don"t think you have to know every detail just the main idea) Russian army splits into two major parts, with rennekampf in the north, and samsonov in the south. August 20: rennenkampf wins battle of gumbinnen.
