Some believed that there would be one more big war which would end all wars. Lots of people believed that the 20th century would be peaceful: causes of the war (mania) Militarism arms race; especially naval arms race between ger and eng. Nationalism there were national rivalries (fra and ger for example) Multi-ethnic empires tried to stay together (austro-hungarian, ottoman) Imperialism major powers trying to keep their empires at the expense of others. Many european leaders were incapable or incompetent: powder-keg theory it"s all building up! Germany afraid of french revenge on alsace-lorraine; tries to keep france isolated. France afraid of german attack, builds up their forces by the german border. Russia wants a western warm-water port, but the link from the mediterranean to. Austria empire is in danger of falling apart as some areas try to become independent. England has a policy that there navy must be the stronger than the 2nd and 3rd strongest combined.
