Dutch separated out warships from trading vessels unlike the portuguese and. Ships were often divided into 64 shares and merchants invested in numbers that divided into the 64 share. Dividing their risks in case some didn t come back. If any ships went down the loss was spread through the community. Merchants were harnessing the power of the state to what they did. Took the share ideas from ships into companies and the country was run politically by a merchant oligarchy. Italian banking families had been around since 14th century. The dutch would not be a family operation but an operation of shareholders in a company. Ability to organize and use finical order to control their society even though they have a far smaller population then the rest of the european superpowers. Voc (dutch trading company) had a high proportion of german, swiss, english, Scotts, poles, danes and french who worked as soldiers.
