Can a variable be both categorical and continuous: not at the same time, but you can force a continuous variable into categories. E. g. , age can be continuous (age is 28, 45, etc. ) but age groups (10-19 yrs, 20-29 yrs) are categorical (cid:894)or (cid:862)dis(cid:272)rete(cid:863)(cid:895) variables. Input v. may be able to influence the outcome v. but not the other way around. Demographic variables are all input variables: outcome variable: happens after the input variable, outcome v. may be influenced by the input variable but not the other way around, usually the outcome v. are the results. Study the effects of hours spent studying on the final exam score: dependent v. (continuous) = final exam score.
