Document Summary
Jan 26th 2016 -lecture 4: models of disability. Much of what we take as fact is grounded in theory. =we think there"s a set of established facts but many things that become facts are later discovered not to be but are derived from theory. Understanding theory that supports facts enables us to criticize, deconstruct, and change aspects that might be harmful. Good way to take apart a problem & get a better understanding: ex: historical example of deaf-dumb individuals: used to think they had lower intelligence & lacked learning capabilities= was a fact. When fact changed then understanding about such people grew & acceptance grew. New theories provide alternative frameworks, can change how we understand the concept of disability. Also reveals much about wider society itself, not merely individual experience of disability= tells us a lot about those who aren"t disabled.
