Institutions of disability include nursing home, hospital, psychiatric facility, group home, Central role in genesis of social model of disability activism. They do matter for chronic illness: many others incarcerated in prison system. Perhaps 55% of american prison population diagnosed with some form of mental illness. 20% with "serious" mental illness (bipolar/schizophrenia) : do tend to think about criminals & mental health as different but some people do approach them as an overlapping concept. Many lives book-ended by institutional living= usually enter at a very young age (special schools or vocational schools) & people"s lives often end in institutions as well (hospitals/nursing homes)& especially true for those with disabilities. 1. 5 million people resident of such institutions (not including prison). Decline happens at slightly different times depending on the diagnosis. Although people were forcefully placed in institutions in the past, it is now voluntary: voluntary: but still a high degree of pressure.
