Benjamin jesty, a dorset farmer, took pus from an infected cow"s udder (suffered cowpox) and inoculated his wife & children. 1796 1st inoculation to james phipps, 8 yrs. Vaccination comes from the latin word vacca meaning cow. Considered one of the most significant advances in public health in the 20th century. A person is vaccinated to stimulate their own immune system to create immunologic defenses against natural exposures to viruses and bacteria. Incase you are ever exposed to the real thing. Live, attenuated= live but diluted to reduce virulence (use the weakened (attenuated) form of the virus) Genetically engineered (but has all the antigenic sites) All or part of the microorganism is administered. Purpose: evoke a response that mimics real disease.
