Another way we might think about this is in terms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Within the field of medicine, they"re defined as mental illness in need of curing and treatment. In other, typically inline communities of sufferers, eds are seen as a lifestyle choice and something not needing medical intervention. Health and illness are not universal, permanent, natural, or objective categories. Things we think of as healthy are good and illnesses are bad. A teenager is not an objective thing, it"s a category that we"ve constructed. The same is true of race, it"s fluid, what"s black or white varies between region, and time period.
