Health and illness are not universal, permanent, natural, and objective categories. These categories ( health and illness ) are very real to individuals and their personal experiences. Also real as a part of the social fabric, a form of communication. There are many languages of health and illness. Speakers of the same language may understand each other but meaning may also get lost in translation. A physician walks into his office and announces to the patient i see on your file that you weighed in at 240lbs today . This may mean very many things depending on a person"s language. Disease labels make value judgments about what is normal. Sad didn"t exist 30 years ago, but now is diagnosed 1 in every 18 people.
