A patient is someone who submits to the orders of a doctor. The definition of patient is to wait for something. Clients want to hire mds because they recognize that they have expertise in this field and you want them to work on your behalf. Consumers have some level of education or expectation of health and they work in partnership with an md to achieve their desired goal. They have done the research themselves, they play an active role, they take control of their health situation. This transformation of people from being patients to a client or consumer is both praised and criticized. From the 1960s onwards, people are starting to fight against authority. Civil rights movement, wave of feminism, mentally ill patients. Many prominent female activist fight against the notion that male physicians know best for a female"s body. Single women were denied access or birth control and abortions.
