Who are we in health encounters: patients who must submit to md"s authority, clients who hire md, consumers who work in partnership with md. Antecedents of health consumerism: 1960s onwards tendency to question traditional authority professional expertise, feminism critiques, male control bodies of reproduction, scientific notions of female inferiority, questionable medical advice under attack. Neoliberalism: from liberalism: freedom for individuals to do, think, act as they wish, free market, minimum regulation, globalization, global market, smaller state, less waste, privatization. Individual responsibility and rights valued more than public goods. Antecedents of health consumerism ii: neoliberalism and health. Human pain is infinite, desire to purchase services and products to alleviate ills also infinite. Free market, devoid of regulation, offers best opportunity for solving health problems. Healthcare a purchasable consumer good: deconstruction of social welfare policies, marketism introduced into health coverage. Increase choice and personal responsibility: state increases emphasis on consumer autonomy.
