Men are more likely to live independently in community with spouse. Women live longer, so more likely to live alone and with children. More women live alone, less likely to get remarried after husband dies which lets us understand the trend of women living alone. Decrease in the proportion of women living alone (census, 2011) Between 2001 and 2011, proportion of older women who lived alone declined while proportion of older men living alone remained relatively stable; this is cause men are living longer. Largest decrease of women aged 80 to 84 living alone. In 2011, 40. 2% of women between the ages of 80 to 84 lived alone, down from 46. 1% in 2001. Common law arrangements have become more common.
