Lecture #3: health and aging: january 12, 2017. Myths and stereotypes of aging and how aging is represented in our culture. Physical limitations doesn"t mean you have bad mental problems. Many people die soon after retirement- many people leave work due to poor health and die, but they die due to poor health not retirement. Golden years- no responsibilities, life is good. All older people are wealthy or poor- not a homogeneous group, not the same type of jobs. Aging is a burden on the old and on society. Most older people live in institutions-not true, may be asked on exam. All older people are alike- you become even more unique as you become older through experience. Prejudice or discrimination against people based on age- most often involves older people. Beliefs, attitudes, and acts that denigrate individuals or groups based on their chronological age.
