Number and size of tastebuds decline (ex. more sugar in tea, may eat less) Loss of sense of smell declines, especially after 70 (can lead to loss of interest in food) Receptors for touch, temperature, and vibration decrease (ex. more likely to get burn from hot water because do not have same sensation) Changes in sight and hearing have the greatest effect on a person"s ability to function later in life. Older adults may withdraw from social life and increase dependancy on others (ex. can develop paranoia or respond inappropriately because cannot hear) Harder time seeing a contrast between light and dark as people age. Decreased ability to see ne detail (need more light) Glare sensitivity and decline in peripheral vision (ex. glare on oor tiles in nursing home is problematic)
