Consider the family as a fluid set of relations that ebbs and flows over time within and across generations. As the family unit ages, it moves through time. Pyramid family structure: two people got together and had 6 children, then children have 2 kids each (from 2 people) Bean pole family structure: 2 people but decide to only have one child, and that child may decide to no have any children. Social and cultural changes increasing complexity of family structure. Smaller networks of families, no longer pyramids; we"re having a decreasing number of children verticalization of the family structure. Life course perspective helps explain dynamic nature of family life and social relations. Changes in marital status often lead to change in a person"s social status and social networks. What happens to a person in earlier life affects their roles and relationships later in life (marriage, divorce, children, childlessness) Nearly all canadians will marry at least once in their lifetime.
