Female victims outnumber men by almost 2 to 1: most cases involve passive, verbal, emotional, and financial abuse rather than physical abuse or neglect, neglect of older people can arise from unresolved family conflict. Financial abuse of community-dwelling seniors os often by someone they trust. If the older person is isolated and in poor health, cognitively impaired, or dependent, there is a higher risk of abuse. 4 social changes explaining increased interest in abuse: growth of the older person, the increased political power of older people, the women"s movement and a critical analysis of the family, state"s willingness to intervene in family life. Characteristics of the most commonly abused older adults: over the age of 75, widowed or living alone, under the control of influence of the abuser. Socially isolated: with some degree of mental incapacity and some degree go physical frailty.
