Document Summary

Out of 10,000 older people, 65% said they were still sexually active (doesn"t mean they are active with people, can mean on their own) Sexuality is an important aspect of human experience at any age. There are a variety of ways to express intimacy. The need to feel desirable and wanted lasts throughout life and is important for self-esteem. Sexual desire evolves with age and we express it differently at different stages of our live. Older people"s sexual experience is strongly affected by stereotypes, misconceptions, jokes about old age and sexuality. Ageism has contributed to these negative perceptions: Older people are the same, not interested in sex. Media perpetuates this, when you get older lose your attractiveness. Many stereotypes exist about older adults" activities and their sex lives. Most older people have an interest in sex throughout life, and given good health and a partner, older people can and do have sexual relations into old age.
