Concern for older persons and their quality of life. The proportion of older persons is increasing; ppl living longer. Looks at the subject from two points of view; how aging affects the individual and how an aging population will change society. An interdisciplinary field that draws on research from the biological sciences, clinical medicine, and behavioral, and social sciences (auger 2002: 18) Researchers work to produce accurate knowledge about aging. Professionals apply this knowledge to create a better life for older adults. Seeks to recognize the social, political, cultural contexts in which older people live (featherstone and wernick 1995:23 in auger 2002:30) Critical gerontologists argue that the increase in numbers of seniors is not the basic problem but rather it is that this increase is taking place in a society that devalues the elderly. (auger 2002:32) More education = more knowledge on aging. Conclude that ageism in canadian society leads women to cover their signs of aging.
