Past: death was a normal event that was likely to happen in all stages of life. Current research findings: canadian data: when asked most people would prefer to die at home, but about 70% of deaths occur in the hospital (cihi, 2007) Obituary: barbara did not wish to have a formal funeral service, opting instead for a singular departure from this world. She knew that every single hour in life is precious, and she was adamant that her own death would not take up even a few of them from those of us left behind. Other important ethical issues: awareness of the dying process, informed consent, legal rights or respect for autonomy, ensuring a dignified death. Advance directives: reasons for the interest: respect for autonomy, medical advancements, public disputes. Inability for deeply ill people to convey their wishes and symptom status. End of life issues: durable power of attorney for finances same as above but for financial issues.
