Chronic worriers - not fixed, may not even have a clear source. Accompanied by minor disturbances in sleep, irritability, concentration, restlessness. Difficult diagnosis to work with because it might be hard to distinguish someone who is simply a worry-wort from someone who has gad. Controversial, why: lower diagnostic reliability - the odds of various diagnosticians agreeing on the di- agnosis would be unlikely, far more common in women (roles? stereotypes?) Freud: anxiety a warning sign about id"s impulses. We get anxious when we"re about to do something that we shouldn"t do. Behavioural: learned behaviours acquired through conditioning and reinforce- ment. Life events: people who experience agoraphobia are more likely to have faced. Genetics may place a role; inherit proclivity to panic vs. experiencing generalized anxiety distinctly: doesn"t hold true for all types of anxiety disorders. Perhaps panic disorder results from brain defect - when faced with biologically dangerous situations (hyperventilation), we misinterpret these signals as genuinely life threatening.
