HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder, Combat Stress Reaction, Etiology
Document Summary
Historically, both ocd and ptsd belonged to anxiety disorders, sharing core feature (anxious distress). Force us to ask questions about how we separate one disorder from another. Etiology (cause): ptsd and ocd often result from traumatic events or episodes. Ex. if a person witnesses a violent shooting, they may act in ways that show ptsd but also ocd: compulsions often follow trauma, yet crucial differences may exist . Why does this matter: changes how we see society, changes how other people see us. First shell shock , then combat fatigue after ww2. Are these all the same thing: society gets the mental illnesses it needs. The way it is expressed, conforms to the demands of the given place and time. New to chapter on trauma and stress-related disorders in dsm-5. Way experience, victims of violence, industrial accidents, likely candidates: rare dsm mention of etiology (rare because dsm never mentions cause)
