Lecture 1b: how do we define mental health and illness ll. Some use illness as an overarching term that includes various disorders (ocd), others use illness and disorder interchangeable. Person-first is when mention the person before you mention their illness or disorder. First published by apa in 1952 (document) Discusses prevalence of each disorder in general pop. Doesn"t reveal the discrimination the person may feel. Reinforces a hegemonic social order through regulating deviance (takes the dominant form of normality at a given time) Reliability is not the same as validity (a broken scale is always ten pounds off) Following the famous rosenhan experiment, pressure to create uniformity in psychiatric diagnoses. Shift of focus to symptoms rather than etiology. 10 years to be made, 1500 experts consulted. Controversial: autism spectrum, bereavement clause, expanded adhd, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, binge-eating disorder, no internet addiction etc. Some groups vowing not to use it. Defined as a mental disorder by expression, not necessarily cause.
